How to Care for Polymer Clay Earrings (So They Last for Years!)
Share
If you've ever invested in a pair of handmade polymer clay earrings, you probably want to keep them looking as beautiful as the day you got them. And that's what so fabulous about polymer clay. Polymer clay is actually a really durable material when it's properly cared for. I want your jewelry to last (to the point where I can even offer repairs if you ever need them down the line!). But I want you to treat them with love and care too, because they are still delicate works of art that deserve the attention.
Here's everything you need to know.
What is polymer clay, exactly?
Polymer clay is a type of PVC-based modeling clay that hardens when baked in an oven. It's lightweight, versatile, and can be shaped, textured, painted, and sanded into incredibly detailed pieces. As someone who spends hours conditioning, sculpting, and finishing each pair by hand, I can tell you that the material itself is built to last. But like any handmade item, it benefits from a little TLC!
Keep them away from heat and direct sunlight
Polymer clay is heat-cured, which means prolonged exposure to high heat after baking can cause warping or discolouration over time. Avoid leaving your earrings in a hot car, on a sunny windowsill, or near a heat source for extended periods. A little sunlight here and there is totally fine, just don't store them somewhere that gets consistently hot.
Avoid water and chemicals
While polymer clay itself is water-resistant, the hardware (ear hooks, jump rings) and any surface finishes can be affected by moisture and chemicals. Take your earrings off before swimming, showering, or applying perfume, hairspray, or lotions. A good rule of thumb: jewelry goes on last, after your beauty routine is done.
Clean them gently
If your earrings need a clean, use a soft, slightly damp cloth and gently wipe the surface. Avoid soaking them or using harsh chemical cleaners. You can use a light acetone soaked qtip to gently remove dirt or makeup. For pieces with texture, a dry soft-bristled brush (like a clean makeup brush) works beautifully to get into the crevices without damaging the finish.
But please do not be rough and do not use acetone or water on painted pieces or pieces with dried florals.
Store them properly
This is the one I see people overlook most often. Tossing earrings into a bag or a pile with other jewelry is a recipe for scratches and bent hooks. Store your polymer clay earrings flat or hanging in a jewelry organizer, away from other pieces that could scratch them. A small velvet pouch or a compartmentalized jewelry box works perfectly.
Handle with care, but don't be afraid to wear them :)
Polymer clay is more durable than it looks, but it can chip or crack if dropped onto a hard surface from a height or thrown around. That said, please wear your earrings! They're meant to be enjoyed. Just be mindful when you're taking them on and off, and avoid bending the pieces. I feel people treat jewelry with diamonds and gemstones with this level of care, and precious handmade art deserves the same!
A note on handmade quality
Every pair of earrings I make goes through a careful sanding and finishing process so that the edges are smooth and the pieces are polished front and back. That attention to detail means your earrings are already starting from a place of quality, your job is just to maintain it.
With a little care, your polymer clay earrings can last for years and stay just as vibrant and beautiful as when you first got them. And honestly? That's one of the things I love most about this material. It's made to be worn, loved, and kept.
